Ask For Help When Winds Of Prosperity Blow

On occasion, those who are in comfortable circumstances feel the need for a church affiliation. Most of the time, however, we will do better with people living comfortable lives if we can convey how desperately those of us in the Church need their help. Though this idea seems paradoxical at first, it reflects a mechanism of conversion the Savior taught: “Whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it” (Mark 8:35).

Almost every calling we undertake in the Church can be a missionary opportunity when we invite others to “lose their lives” and serve with us. We can be confident that, just as we feel the Spirit when we serve, our friends can feel the same Spirit—and realize that despite their comfort and prosperity, they are experiencing something new that they want.

When we help others to do God’s will, they learn far more about what the Church and the Spirit feel like than they ever could through a conversation or from attending a ward social activity.

Whenever we’ve decoupled our friendships from our invitations, we’ve been amazed at our friends’ willingness to respond and serve. In our experience, many people feel a need to help others, and our invitations provide opportunities for them to do so.
